Overall Internet Speeds Climb, but Highest Speeds Stagnate reports Exede Internet

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 01, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Average internet speeds are climbing worldwide, but different countries world-wide-web access rates are booming or busting at different paces.

WhatÂ’s driving the surge in speed?

First, the averages: Average global internet speeds as of the end of Q2 2012 are 3 Mbps, which is a 13% increase in quarter-over-quarter speeds and 15% bump in year-over-year speeds; however, gains are not happening globally. South Korea, world leader in internet access rates, actually saw a decrease of nearly 10% quarter-over-quarter, to 14.2 Mbps. The USA, in 9th place with 6.6 Mbps, saw a drop of 1.4%.

Internet customers with speeds over 10Mbps dropped globally, as well. South Koreans with 10 Mbps-or-higher speeds dropped to 84%, a 2% decline, and the USA dropped to 57% of its internet-ready citizens with speeds above the same threshold, down 4.6% and ranked at 13th place globally.

The Northeastern United States continues to enjoy the highest internet speeds in the country. Delaware is the fastest of the states, with 39% of internet users posting speeds above 10 Mbps, which is a 19% jump quarter-over-quarter. While the highest density of above-average internet speeds are found on the eastern seaboard, Washington state (home of Microsoft) has a notable number of residents with 10 Mbps or higher.

The one surprise in broadband usage comes from Florida, where as of Q2, 69% of its population makes regular use of broadband internet. That is up 2.7% quarter-over-quarter and into 10th place for internet usage among all states.

An additional side-note for the tech-savvy, IPv6 adoption rate increases currently sit at 7%, but that number may be misleading. Analysts say the seemingly low adoption rate increase since IPv6 became available this summer may have more to do with larger companies and organizations having adopted the protocol early to get a head-start on troubleshooting.
