Wawa Hit by Floods after Record Rainfall Recorded reports Value Dry

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 01, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Wawa has declared a state of emergency following morning flooding on Friday that was the result of record rainfall in the area.

WawaÂ’s mayor stated that an overflowing creek caused damage to the basement of the hospital as well as some drains that have backed up in the area.

“It was such a heavy downpour that if you were driving down the street you wouldn’t see in front of your vehicle,” Linda Nowicki said. “It was raining that heavily.”

The mayor stated that the concern was washed out roads that surrounded the area and community connecting the city to surrounding areas.

"There is a portion of Highway 17 at Catfish Creek, it was closed, and then about 10 kilometres south it was closed," she added.

"So we had people who live on a lake there that are cut off. They canÂ’t go north or south. The other concern was outside of Wawa, there are people who live along Lake Superior on what is called the Harbour Road and Long Beach Road. The Harbour Road also leads to Michipicoten First Nation."

911 distress calls were received by residents in the harbor of Lake Superior. One family had to be removed via helicopter. The OPP have returned to the area to locate the second resident.

OPP also advised Highway 101 east of Wawa is now open. They requested that drivers use caution for the first five miles when leaving Wawa. They noted Michipicoten First National and Long Beach Road are unable to escape the areas of road due to erosion.

Nowichi stated that the state of emergency is partially due to a need for cash in the area, as the bill for fixes cannot be handled by the area alone.

“We don't have the funds to repair them,” she said.

“At this stage, with the two bridges that failed, we're looking at a $4 to $5 million bill to replace those. And when you add the fact that the other roads that were supposed to be used to get into town are washed out, we will need money to help fix those.”
