Experts Say Not To Push Too Hard In the Gym reports You're Not Stupid

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 04, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- While some couch potatoes may be excited about the news of “too much working out being bad for you”, the general idea falls under the Aristotelian 'temperance' category. Working out too much or too hard can be bad for your heart.

Doctors are warning that rather than adding years to your life, being a fitness freak could work against you, and send you to an early grave. Medical professionals note that while regular moderate exercise that includes cardio and anaerobic workouts are beneficial, it is possible to do too much.

A review on the health of runners confirmed that 'A courtine of moderate physical activity will add life to your years, as well as years to your life. In contrast, running too fast, too far and for too many years may speed oneÂ’s progress towards the finish line of life.Â’

A three-page editorial from the Heart, US Cardiologist James O'Keefe and Carl Lavie said that advised that those who want to exercise at full tilt should limit the workouts to 30 to 50 minutes per day. They added that marathons should be viewed as something to do occasionally, and not a regular challenge.

The editorial warns that excessive and intense exercise for more than an hour or two can do damage to the heart, causing its tissue to stretch, tear, and even scar. These effects raise the odds of dangerous rhythm changes to the heart.

There were two studies presented to back the argument must be done with temperance/moderation, just like anything else in life.

The first study was co-written by one of the editorials authors, and tracked the health of 50,000 people for 30 years. Of the 14,000 runners, all were 19% less likely to have died than others during that time; however, closer analysis of results showed that the longevity was limited by those who ran more than 20 miles per week.

Those who did run more than 20 miles did not seem to fare much (if at all) better than the non-runners. The study also revealed that the best speed for running was 6-7 miles per hour.
