Ability to Avoid Spam Bin is Hard, but Clicks are Up reports Reply Manager

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 23, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- When it comes to email marketing, it is not getting easier to get a message delivered to inboxes. Major webmail sites like Gmail can often bury legitimate opt-in email messages, and like articles, into the spam folder. But there is a silver lining, as email opens are on the rise, thanks in part to the perceived security of letters that do make it though. That means clicks are up as well.

A study by Epsilon and Email Institute found that the use of “triggered messaging” has risen over 10% each year. Triggers messages gained 75% higher opening rates, while they gained 114.8% increases in click rates as did “business as usual” messages. These numbers are totals from the third quarter of 2012.

Jill LeMaire, of Epsilon, noted that Triggered messages are identified by their campaign naming, such as Trigger, Welcome, Thank You, Confirmation and Saved Cart.”

LeMaire added “It’s no surprise that triggered messaging improves customer engagement, builds loyalty and drives sales,” said Judy Loschen, VP of Digital Analytics at Epsilon. “The challenge is the integration of triggered message systems, as with other real time systems, can be an overwhelming and often lengthy process that requires significant investment to yield the pay-off. Over the past year we’ve seen many marketers investing in the implementation of triggered message systems because the return on investment is significant and the results are immediate.”

The companies BAU analysis was of over 6 billion emails across various industries. The numbers found that non-bounce rate sat at 96.1%. Open rates increased quarter-over-quarter at 6.5% increase for each, and year-over-year at 14.6%, which resulted in an overall OR of 27.2%.

Evan Shumeyko, who stands as Global Director of CRM for OglivyOne, spoke at a MediaPost Email Insider Summit, stating:

Evan Shumeyko, global director of CRM for OgilvyOne, said Monday that social media is growing, but “email is still a prevalent and dominant platform.” One advantage is that it offers an ability to capture customer data that outpaces the social space.

He cited a statistic that 82% of people are comfortable sharing personal information over email.

“To me that is your competitive advantage,” Shumeyko told email marketers in a keynote address at the MediaPost Email Insider Summit.

“That sharing of information via email is a powerful, powerful moment that you can exploit, and it’s something that your peers in social do not have,” he added.
