Thailand Plans to Set Up Public WiFi Service in 2013 reports Deep Blue Communications

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 24, 2012 ) Latham, NY -- Mobile phone companies are working with the Thai government to set up a countrywide WiFi system in 2013.

The network will offer free public access and will include hospitals, schools and government organizations.

“We plan to have at least 250,000 WiFi locations by 2013 and 400,000 by 2015,” Information and Communication Technology Minister Anudith Nakornthap told the Bangkok Post.

The mobile carriers and government agencies will work together in the project that carries a 2-billion-baht price tag.

Sponsors are the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission as well as Advanced Info Service, Total Access Communication and True Move. State-owned companies TOT Plc and CAT Telecom are included.

Advanced Info Service and True Move each will set up 50,000 hotspots, CAT will install 30,000, TOT will install 22,000, and Total Access and the Telecommunications Commission will be in charge of the remaining 98,000.

The WiFi network will help mobile phone carriers because it will allow their customers to reduce their use of 3G networks, Anudith said.

The minister noted that the network would be extended to an additional 30,000 schools at a cost of 890 million baht. Details of the One Tablet per Child project will be hammered out in January, Anudith said.

“We plan to use an e-auction system, opening for both local and foreign suppliers,” said Anudith.

Some 1.6 million more tablets will be provided for Prathom 1 and Mathayom 1 students. That phase of the project is estimated to cost 4.48 billion baht.

Total Access Communication will expend 12 million baht next year to enable 12 public hospitals to access the public WiFi network, said Jon Eddy Abdullah, the companyÂ’s chief executive.

The mobile phone sector will benefit from full implementation of 3G service, according to Kasikom Research Center. The service in 2013 will be worth as much as 215 billion baht, the center predicts. Of that total, 32.5% will be wireless data service.
