I LEAD Receives New Grant to Bolster Native Education Administrators reports Complete Curriculum

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 24, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Montana State University and Little Big Horn College institutions have created a collaborative gram in order to train American Indian educators, as well as improve schools in proximity to Indian reservations in the state. The program will also reach out to neighboring states, and the program has received $1.2 million in total thus far.

The grant will span four years, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and will enable MSU's Indian Leadership Education and Development program ( ILEAD). The concept is to expand the scope of the educational leadership for Native Americans. It will attempt to enroll more students in the program across the participating states, and will fund a new Center for Indian Education Leadership, in collaboration with the Little Big Horn College of Grow Agency.

I LEAD offers American Indian teachers opportunities to earn postgraduate degrees in school administration, while being able to retain their jobs. The program is in place to bring in new American Indian principals and superintendents where high populations of American Indian's reside.

MSU education professor and program administrator, Bill Ruff, stated that I LEAD is ultimately designed with a pressing issue in mind: the achievement of individuals in the oft under-performing native-catering schools.

"Native American school administration is very underrepresented in this region of the country," Ruff said. "In addition, there has been a lot of turnover among school leaders on Native American reservations. We believe this turnover is contributing to an achievement gap. If we can facilitate the leadership development of educators who are already working in these communities, the chance of them staying in these communities is greater, which would in turn foster greater stability and higher performance."

Ruff added that a majority of the schools with nigh Native American students are generally located in rural areas. Professional development and training for the field of education is often difficult to come by in the area.

I LEAD students will spend four weeks at the end of the summer at the MSU campus in Bozeman. These participants meet once per month the remainder of the year. Between each monthly meeting, students complete online course assignments, with curriculum designed for participants to solve programs facing their particular school.

The new grant differs from previous grants to I LEAD. This grant covers Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming, and provides funding for 40 students. The grant is in partnership with the Little Big Horn College, and will help directly in development of educational leadership for native Americans.
