Google Taking Down More Infringement Sites than Ever reports Los Angeles SEO

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 24, 2012 ) Los Angeles, CA -- Google's take-down tool that is used for search results has escalated in use tenfold since June of 2012.

When publicly posting take-down notices started just before the start of summer, 250,000 requests per week were processed through the system. That system is used to let people or companies request Google to remove a link or website that is subject to copyright infringement. The number of requests has catapulted to over 2.5 million per week.

The change is no small one, but that does not mean it is by any means unprecedented. Increased requests have been steadily over the past couple of years. The 250,000 per week in the first half of 2012 was more than good processed over the entire year of 2009.

Google reports that other than some unfortunate missteps, most requests are legitimate and handled properly.

Copyright holders have been the target of scrutiny for casting too wide a net, closing down innocent sites along with the ones that do impede on copyrights. The argument is bolstered by the misappropriated request to remove links to the BBC and government websites.

Google notes that a large majority of the requests it receives are legitimate and are handled quite properly. "Between December 2011 and November 2012, we removed 97.5% of all URLs specified in copyright removal requests," it says in a blog post.

Google states it is doing its very best given the incredibly high number of requests that it receives each and every week. It asks that copyrighted material are proliferated, as rights holders are becoming more aggressive.

The company seems by no means to be pleased with its being forced to act as copyright policeman. Before releasing the numbers, Google stated that "as policymakers evaluate how effective copyright laws are, they need to consider the collateral impact copyright regulation has on the flow of information online."
