FTC and Google Possibly Nearing End of Investigation reports SEO Guy

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 25, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and internet juggernaut Google are growing ever-closer to ending a two-year investigation that stemmed from allegations of monopolistic behavior by the latter. The investigation looked into implementation of concessions that fall short of a company rivals sought after, according to those close to the negotiations.

The ending of the investigation would come by way of a deal, which would still require approval from a commission comprised of five members. In the deal, Google would agree to limits on ability to use content from other websites, and would furthermore make it easier for marketers to allocate online data adds to other services.

In exchange, there would be no action by the FTC to look further into claims that Google uses its power over the search and search-engine market to damage rival companies, thereby giving itself an unfair advantage on an uneven playing field.

In the final round of talks, the two sides took the time to focus on if Google would and could accept the consent decree, which limits its practices henceforth. Those familiar with the deal who provided information spoke under conditions of anonymity due to the situation still being rather hush-hush.

Google has stated that it is against acceptance of any such agreement, and has been lobbying to make concessions that are considered to be “voluntary.” While the company seems capable of avoiding the decree, it would cause quite a stir amongst competitors. Those companies feel the federal actions are not strong enough, and are likening the situation to that of the Justice Department's handling of Microsoft in the 1990s.

The chairman of the FTC has declined any comments. Google followed suit, only reiterating its public statement. “We continue to work cooperatively with the Federal Trade Commission and are happy to answer any questions they may have.”

The ending of the FTC case will put the hopes of Google competitors on the European Union, which is involved in its own antitrust investigation against Google.

There have been multiple companies who have decided to lobby the Justice Department regarding the FTC's handling of the situation.
