Music List Tries to Spot Next YearÂ’s Success reports Spy Tunes

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 25, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The BBC Sound of 2013 has made its predictions for the next ‘big thing’.

The annual listing is true to form, picking likely commercial winners rather than artists who make a sincere connection with hardcore fans, writes Telegraph music critic Neil McCormick.

Among the mentions is a group of strong-voiced singers including Tom Odell and Laura Mvula. Pop singers Arlissa and A*M*E made the list, although they are more concerned with commercial success than winning over the critics. Three singers conspicuously missing are Matt Corby, Josh Kumra and Allen Stone.

The music industry appears to want loud rockers to make a comeback, and the category of guitar bands is crowded, McCormick writes. NME has noticed Palma Violets, and a female band with potential is Savages. HAIM earned acclaim at the SXSW festival with a mixture of R&B and Fleetwood Mac.

The Irish bands Kodaline and Little Green Cars offer pleasing harmonies and epic rock. The list, did not include The Strypes, considered by McCormick to be the hottest Irish band. The group is made up of teenage boys whose style is reminiscent of the early Rolling Stones.

A catch-all category that McCormick considers Odd Pop is characterized by post-Internet music. At the top of this group is Angel Haze, a rapper from New York who already is pushing the envelope. AlunaGeorge specializes in an artsy kind of music, while ChVrches have gone retro with a synth pop sound.

These types of lists try to predict what will be fresh next year, but that can be problematic, according to McCormick. It inspires both fans and critics to wish for an underdog to unexpectedly seize the award.

This year, no one band or singer dominates, and that means those who did not make the BBCÂ’s list should not lose hope. It is the listeners who have the final say.
