(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 01, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Many opticians and eye-care professionals have been reminded to tell patients that there are important factors regarding UV protection for eyes during winter months.
A recent study from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care has shown that nearly nine of every 10 patients that visit eye doctors feel they are only exposed to UV rays in the summer.
The study also noted that 65% of patients were concerned with protecting their eyes from the ultraviolet rays, while only 6% found any reason for concern when it came to winter months.
“During winter the dangers of UV still exist with 50 per cent of the UV radiation our eyes receive coming from indirect sources, such as reflections from ice and snow on the ground,” said optometrist and director at Specs of Kensington, Daska Barnett.
“Not only can UV rays pierce cloud cover, they reflect off all surfaces in any weather. New research shows eyes are particularly vulnerable to UV light exposure in the early morning and late afternoon, when people least expect it. “
Dr. Barnett added that “As eye care professionals we should remind our patients that protection from UV rays is important to eye health.”
Radiant reflection is more dangerous than the direct sunlight due to the fact that people are more likely to keep their eyes cast downward, rather than upward. The study also noted that fewer UV rays are absorbed by the atmosphere at the higher altitudes, making the UV exposure more direct and dangerous.
'With this in mind building a dialogue with our patients is necessary - not only to educate them on the health dangers but to ensure they make an educated decision on the right product to help protect their eyes,' added Barnett.
According to the number from the study 74% of U.K contact lens wearers were completely unaware of the fact that the lenses can affect the UV protection of an individual. More stated they were willing to pay more for the ability to have UV protection.
