Rhode Island Residents to Vote on Full-Table Gambling at Existing Casinos reports Odds On Betting

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 01, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Rhode Island residents will vote on November 6 regarding an initiative that would allow full-table state-operated casino gambling in both of the stateÂ’s two casinos - Twin River Casino and Newport Grand.

The ballot measure will ask residents whether they think full-table gambling should be allowed at both existing casinos. Two separate questions will be asked of voters, one for each casino, which will require a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ vote.

Supporters of the measure say that it is a must for the stateÂ’s casinos to remain competitive against nearby casino is Massachusetts, where Governor Patrick signed similar legislation in November to allow four new gambling facilities. The Massachusetts facilities are not yet in business.

Spokesperson for the Twin River Casino Patti Doyle says that the measure would bring in additional revenue for both the city and state, as well as bolstering the establishmentÂ’s customer-base, 50% of which she says come from Massachusetts. Diane Hurley, CEO of the Newport Grand, agrees with Hurley that the law would benefit Rhode Island citizens without requiring and new construction. Hurley says that if the measure is ratified it would add 50 jobs to the Newport Grand. Doyle estimates that Twin River would be able to add an additional 350 jobs and guarantee the continuation of employment for the casinoÂ’s current staff of 900 employees.

The city of Newport currently receives nearly $1 million in tax revenue from the Newport Grand and Newport Mayor Henry Winthrop says that full-table gambling could add an additional $300,000 to the city coffers. Winthrop added that the potential for adding new jobs to the area would be “just great”.

Polls made by the Taubman Center for Public Policy showed that both initiatives would likely pass, with favorable ratings of over 55% from both Newport and Lincoln residents.

If the legislation passes on election day, full-table gambling could start as early as July 1, 2013.
