Google Webspam Team Says Guest Posts Okay, but Discourages Abuse reports MP Marketing Solutions

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 01, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Google does not mind if you let guests post on your blog, but make sure they do a good job or you will risk your ranking. Poor-quality posts on otherwise high-quality blogs can drop your search ranking, according to the Silicon Valley-based search giant.

Matt Cutts, head of GoogleÂ’s webspam team, addressed the issue in a recent video talking about the practice of link-building using guest bloggers, a practice that has become much more common since the web search company updated its engine.

Cutts says that guest bloggers are fine, but that guest posts need to be of high-quality and add value to the blog that hosts them. Respected guest bloggers add value to a blogÂ’s reader experience and, Cutts believes, is a winning recipe that adds variety to the site. Blog hosts can attract a broader readership and provide an established platform for lesser-known writers, as well as getting a good back-link for their own blog.

What Cutts is against, he says, is that the practice is being taken too-far:

“Just be mindful that (it) can absolutely be taken to extremes and, in the same way that some practices which make a lot of sense when you think about it with high-quality people, when you’re just doing it as a way to sort of turn the crank and get a massive number of links, that’s something where we’re less likely to count those links.”

More bloggers are turning to guest content to build Google-accepted backlinks. Cutts says the low-quality additions to established blogs are only hurting themselves. In a frenzy to climb onto the front page of Google, Bing and other search engines, many blogs are trusting that quantity of posts will give them enough buoyancy to overcome the sometimes-questionable quality of content.

Cutts advice can usually be taken as a bellwether of how the next wave of Google search engine optimization will proceed; however his comments seem to suggest that while there is a ‘right’ way to accept guest posts, many bloggers are willing to take the risk.
