(CityRegions.Com, October 01, 2021 ) LOS ANGELES, CA - In 1993, director Haile Gerima’s self-distributed film, ‘Sankofa’ made its debut at the 43rd Annual Berlin International Film Festival, and at a series of self-promoted and sold-out screenings across the United States. Other than that, the film has gone virtually unnoticed and unacknowledged.
‘Sankofa’ tells the story of an African-American fashion model who takes a journey through time back to a plantation in North America.
“The film is boundary-pushing” raves Ava DuVernay, who, through her hugely successful company Array, had the film restored in glorious 4K.
Haile Gerima is an Ethiopian-born film director now based in Washington D.C. He graduated from UCLA in the early 1970s and is a part of a group of filmmakers that eventually became known as the “L.A. Rebellion”. The group of artists also includes Charles Burnett, Jamaa Fanaka, Lary Clark and Julie Dash.
Throughout his profound career, Gerima, along with countless other Black, Chicano and Native-American filmmakers, has had to distribute his films himself, stating Hollywood’s long-standing preference for white stories. Thanks to the efforts and admiration of fellow Black filmmaker, Ava DuVernay, his powerful ’93 story is getting a second chance. Gerima, who is now 75 years old, is also receiving the inaugural Vantage Award at the opening gala for the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures!
On September 24, ‘Sankofa’ made its re-release debut at Array Creative Campus, and Step and Repeat LA was called in to create an 8’ tall by 10’ wide Media Wall to serve as the photo-op. Step and Repeat LA also provided its lush green hedge walls, giving the outdoor setup a fresh look…very fitting for the debut of a film “refreshed” in 4K!
“My hope is that new audiences will appreciate and embrace the brilliance of ‘Sankofa’ and the absolute excellence of Mr. Gerima as a filmmaker and thinker” DuVernay told the Hollywood Reporter.
‘Sankofa’ is now available on Netflix!
