In the small village nestled in the south of France, Christmas decorations are up, just as they are across the country and the world. Birds dance from tree to tree, and are signing as they go. There are no hysterical prophets preparing the masses for the end of days, and there are no militants loading assault rifles.
Despite all the normalcy, when the world is scheduled to end in six days, Bugarach will be a place to behold.
In accordance with the Mayan prophecy and the ever-present internet rumor, at an indeterminate moment next Friday, the world is set to end. It is either on schedule to be hit by a rogue planet, swept up in a solar storm, or set to fall into a black hole. On this day, Bugarach has been noted as the place for doomsday cults to survive the Armageddon that will befall everyone on December 21.
The geology of the mountain Pic de Bugarach is something special, as the mountain is known as the 'upside-down mountain' due to the rocks at the top being older than those at the bottom. The many caverns of the mountain inspired Jules Verne's Journey to The Center of the Earth.
The Pic de Bugarach has also become a newfound “Area 51” for UFO enthusiasts. The obsession with the fledgling folklore has helped some industry in the area. There are also reports of cults living in bunkers dug below the village.
All of the odd attractiveness of the mountain did raise the prices of village housing, where 500 euros a night for a Bed and Breakfast, or 400 euros for a night to spend in a tent for the end of days is being enjoyed by the locals.
“There were hundreds of them!’ he says. ‘Some were offering to organize end-of-the-world parties. Some were very scary, threatening me, or the villagers, even themselves. These people are CRAZY! Many I handed straight to the police. All these beliefs attract very vulnerable people.”
