County Adopts Social Media Amendments reports Mashable

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 18, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Gloucester County Freeholders adopted an amendment earlier this year that set to alter a 2006 social media policy.

The county is the first government entity within the region to take such an action.

The policy has aimed to address issues related to the employees use of media, whether on or off the clock.

Employees of the county are now liable for anything that is written or presented in a social media aspect. Employees are prohibited from posting items like photos or content from the county to non-work-related social media sites.

The new amendment works as such: “While the county of Gloucester recognizes and respects the rights of employees to engage in their own personal activities while not working, the line between personal voice and institutional voice is often blurred,” the employee manual reads. “This policy is intended to help employees engage in respectful, knowledgeable interaction in social media and protect the privacy, confidentiality and interests of the County of Gloucester, employees, volunteers, contract staff, vendors, customers, residents and others.”

The county is one of a growing number of employers at the local level with policies regarding social media.

Employees of the Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury are forced to refrain from engaging in any non-work-related social services usage during any of their person l work hours, as per the policy set.

To increase the social media policies within the workplace, there is a rising trend for prospective employers to utilize Facebook and Twitter to gather information on potential employees and candidates for contracts.

Assistant Dean and Director of the Rutgers-Camden Career Center, James Marino, stated that he encourages students to learn what tactful use of social media is in a work context. He states the information is useful for those looking for work

“They definitely should use in. We certainly encourage them to use it as a means of finding work. We encourage them to use the LinkedIn program, describing it as a more professional version of Facebook,” Marino said. “It’s not just to look for jobs, but to do networking and learn about careers, too.”
