Legacy of Literacy Program makes a Positive Difference for Detroit Youth

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 19, 2013 ) Detroit, MI -- It may be an overused phrase, but it does “take a village to raise a child.” And a Highland Park literacy advocate is proof that community support can make good things happen for young people.

Just ask the twenty-four Highland Park and Detroit middle school through college students, who will experience a once in a lifetime opportunity. They are on their way to Washington DC.

The students along with several chaperones will be part of the million Americans, who will be at the Capital on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to witness President Barack Obama be sworn into office for a second term.

The students’ won the chance to make the trip, because of their participation in an essay contest, where they responded to one of three questions. Edith Hightower, one of the chaperones and former Highland Park Schools Superintendent states, “we wanted students to reflect on and write about relevant topics, such as what the first order of business should be for President Obama, or what social issue must be a priority for the president, or why is it critical for the president to establish positive relationships with other countries?”

The Legacy of Literacy Program, established by Mrs. Alma Greer, a retired principal and Highland Park Board of Education member sponsored the contest along with the Detroit Unity Temple and the Highland Park Business Association. The group will leave on Saturday, January 19th and return Tuesday January 22nd.

“I am extremely proud of the students that participated in the essay contest, Greer said, they are our country’s future. I thoroughly enjoyed reading their thoughts on what the president should focus on. It is never to early to get involved in the political framework of America.”

While in Washington DC, the students will visit the Capital and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial monument. Students have been assigned to teams and provided video cameras to produce a documentary and photo album of their experience.
