OntarioÂ’s Attempt to Fill Nursing Positions Seems to Be Working reports ARNA

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 21, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The government of Ontario has initiated a Nursing Graduate Degree that is paying dividends for the Health Sciences North.

The City has a on-site hospital which only holds 35 vacancies for registered nurses. That is a mark down from 70 or more positions that were empty just two years ago. The marked improvement is, of course, a welcome sight.

The Nursing Graduate Guarantee pays new nurses wages for as many as six months, in order to get them both front-line experience with more proper payment.

Many of the nurses are find their way to the Sudbury location though other communities. They often end up making it their permanent residence to continue working.

The young nurses are used to fill dozens of positions that become available each year, as more and more hospital nurses retire.

Vice-President of Human Resources of Health Sciences North, Rhonda Watson, gave a presentation on employee recruitment to the hospitals local board of directors.

According to her numbers, the hospital employees 3,930 total employees across all sectors. Nearly 1,300 of them are nurses, and members of the local nurses association. Another near-1,300 are either clerical or vice employees with the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

There are over 600 allied health professionals that work as organons of the hospitals members of the Ontario Public Service Union.

Watson noted that positions are slowly being occupied by the younger generations, and 17.2% of the hospital's employees are now within the category of Generation Y.

Just over a quarter of the employees are Baby Boomers, while 57.1% are within the Generation X years.

According to available data, the average age for those working at the hospitals is 41.9 years.

Turnover rates for the hospital are well within the average of the rest of Ontario, according to Watson. Resignations from hospital positions stood at 4.6%, along with a 1.1% retiring rate.
