Teenagers Speaks of Depression While on RoAccutane reports Natural Acne Remedies HQ

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 30, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A teen who was hospitalized after experiencing severe depression after taking acne medication has now fought her way back into a healthy lifestyle. It took nine months for Emma Fox to return from her crippling depression she experienced after taking RoAccutane.

The company that has created the drug insists that the drug is still not definitively linked between it and the severe mood swings some suffer from following its use. However, Emma and her mother state vehemently that the drug must no longer be prescribed to non-adults.

Emma stated that over the life four years, her life was a living hell, and blames the drug for its part in the period of difficulty. RoAccutane is taken to treat moderate to severe acne. Emma stated that within weeks of starting on a regimen of the drug, she noted obvious alterations in her mood.

“I was feeling very low, I was getting very teary and upset and just a bit confused because I didn't really understand why I felt like that."

Caroline, Emma's mother, became concerned with her daughters wellbeing, and the worries were confirmed when she read disturbing passages in the journal of her daughter.

"She felt she was a nobody, there was lots that said that something had taken over her and she wasn't in any control, she wasn't herself, she didn't know what was happening to her, she was terrified."

By December of 2009, Emma collapsed at her school and was rushed into hospital, where she remained bedridden and fed through a tube.

She recalled of the experience, "I just wanted to stay in bed I was just so lifeless, I can't describe how low I felt that I just couldn't see the point in anything and it's very hard to explain."

Emma was finally treated for depression, and began a recovery process that took the better opart of a year. She has since completed her GCSE at Lincoln College, where she is receiving high marks.

Both Emma and her mother warn others who are being prescribed RoAccutane to be very warry of the drug and its associated dangers.

"I would like to see it banned because I don't believe that the likes of Emma are worth those that do get the benefits of RoAccutane,” said Caroline.

A spokesperson for Roche, the company that makes the drug has released a counterstatement, saying, “RoAccutane has transformed the lives of many acne sufferers, but like most medications it can have side effects. Whilst no definitive cause and effect relationship has been established, to directly link mood swings and depression with the drug there have been rare reports amongst both those taking RoAccutane and acne sufferers in general.”

The spokesperson continued: "As as precaution we recommend that anybody experiencing these, or other possible side effects with the treatment, to tell their doctor immediately."
