(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A common problem among men and women alike is that the respective first sexual experience is often considered a not-so-great one. It is often consider something that simply must be pushed through, then quickly forgotten about due to the awkwardness and ignorance in which it is enacted. However, a recent study shows that it may have a lot more to do with whom we are as individuals than previously assumed, adding even more pressure to the actual scenarios of “first encounters”. What may have been unearthed is that the first time may also be the most important time.
Researchers at the Universities of Tennessee and Mississippi surveyed undergraduates, 206 women and 113 men, about how and when they lost their virginity. The study also focused on the content in which the loss of virginity was experienced. Items like regret and fear going into the event were also surveyed. Many noted their first time as being an experience that involved “anxiety”, “negativity,” and “connection” or “afterglow.”
The students were also asked about the rate of their current sex life when it came to such concepts as control, satisfaction, well-being, and so forth.
The results were mixed, and the positive first-time experiences predicted that physical and emotional satisfaction later in life was more easily met. For those who enjoyed the positive first experience, they tended to feel more satisfaction overall in their current sex lives, and reported less “sexual depression.”
For those who have a negative experience, anxiety and negativity were often coupled with sexual activity, often felt after-the-fact. The individuals often felt like they had much less control of the situations and felt a higher level of anxiety regarding the issue.
"These results suggest that one's first-time sexual experience is more than just a milestone in development," wrote the authors. "Rather, it appears to have implications for their sexual wellbeing years later."
"While this study doesn't prove that a better first time makes for a better sex life in general, a person's experience of losing their virginity may set the pattern for years to come," said author Matthew Shaffer, who suggested that thought and behavior patterns may be formed the first time we have sex and then guide future experiences.
