(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Students at the University of California, Berkeley have called the University to end caps on the health care coverage, which could leave them to have to foot the bill for their own medical treatment.
Most California campuses limit students' coverage to $400,000, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, in a recent report. However, students at the University of California are now saying that it is not enough for illnesses such as cancer or other prolonged and expensive treatments. Thousands of students have thus pointed a petition drive to put an end to the cap-limits.
Kenya Wheeler, who is a current student at the University of California, Berkeley, and is currently in a master's program in city planning, stated he reached his limit after being diagnosed with cancer last year. He noted that he was forced to marry his girlfriend prematurely in order to get under her insurance coverage plan for continued receptions of coverage for chemotherapy.
"I didn't know when I was diagnosed that I would be in for a battle to fight my cancer- and for my medical care," Wheeler told the UC regents at this month's meeting in San Francisco.
The UC officials have stated to the newspaper that they are considering options, as they first need to assess what it will cost to lift the cap.
The school does not turn a profit for its student health care plan, and cannot afford to lose money, according to UC Chief Financial Officer Peter Taylor, adding "It's a front-burner issue.”
The Affordable Care Act currently bars limits, according to the Chronicle; however that ban does not apply to self-funded health care plans, which is what the UC is defined under.
There are currently 30 universities and systems that cover nearly 300,000 students prefer a self-funded health plan due to the fact it lowers taxes and allows education institutions to maintain funds until they have to pay a claim.
Jack Stobo, who is a physician that currently serves as senior vice president of health services, stated: "If we have students, particularly of UC and in UC programs, who can't get the medical care they need and deserve, then shame on us," he said. "We need to fix that."
