No Desensitization to Real Violence Due to Videogames reports Modded Controllers

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 11, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Often in the wake of tragic events, such as those that took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, people search for a single and wide-spanning answer to the underlying cause. It is so difficult for individuals to fathom the events, that they target any scapegoat possible. While the NRA and gun laws are often the first to be looked at, media violence, and video games appear to be the focus of certain government. However, a new study notes that the claims that video games can spur violence is unfounded.

The outcry against violent games started after the shooting began, and has cropped up after shootings in the past. The reason cited was that Ryan Lanza had the popular video game “Mass Effect” as a “liked” item on his Facebook. In what can only be described as some of the worst logic ever utilized by man, many decided that the game (and games like it) must be the impetus for Lanza's violence. The claim has now been floated without any evidence that the game has any effect on the mind, nor the fact that millions upon millions have played the game without such incident occurring.

It should be noted that the Mass Effect has come under fire before, as Fox News reported the game contained “Full digital nudity and sex” and was equivalent to “Luke Skywalker meets 'Debbie Does Dallas,'”, which the channel had to retract in embarrassment after it was found it was nowhere near true.

NRA Vice President Wayne LaPierre was all too happy to turn blame away from his organization and put it upon the video game industry, as he accused the gaming industry of being “a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells and stows violence against its own people.”

Even with all the scapegoating occurring, a study published by the “Applied Cognitive Psychology” found that there was zero desensitizing effect associated with violent video games. Bot the Swedish and Australian government reviewed the literature, and each noted there is no sound evidence to support the claims of either the NRA or media. The Supreme Court shared the opinion, and noted the research used as evidence in Brown v Entertainment Merchants “is based on correlation, not evidence of causation, and most of the studies suffer from significant, admitted flaws in methodology.”

The media and NRA also seem to be avoiding the general logic that violent people will be drawn to violent things; however, that does not mean non-violent people will not also enjoy the violent things. Still with no solid evidence, it is not a bad idea to not look into the effects of violent video games on younger individuals or upon those who have more impressionable minds and. That does not, however, that one can run with silly unfounded statements regarding video games and their effects on the mind.
