Couples that Divide Chores Across Gender Line Have More Sex reports Nick Rose Photography

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 11, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Married couples who divide work into the more traditional concepts of “man's work” and “woman's work” reportedly have more sex than couples who share the so-called men's and women's work evenly. This, according to a new study that was co-authored y sociologists at the University of Washington.

There have been supplemental studies that found that husbands receive more sex if they do more housework, implying that sex is in exchange for housework; however, those studies did not factor in the type of work that was being done.

In the new study, which was published in February issue of American Sociological Review, sex is not a bargaining chip, but instead is lined to what types of chores each spouse completes.

Couples who handle the more traditional gender roles within the house reported greater sexual frequency. “The results show that gender still organizes quite a bit of everyday life in marriage,” said co-author Julie Brines, a UW associate professor of sociology. “In particular, it seems that the gender identities husbands and wives express through the chores they do also help structure sexual behavior.”

The authors of the work note that men should not assume that these findings are justifications for avoiding chores that are more noted for women. Sabino Kornrich, a former UW graduate student who researches at the Juan March Institute of Madrid noted, Men who refuse to help around the house could increase conflict in their marriage and lower their wives’ marital satisfaction.”

The research findings came from a national survey of nearly 4,500 heterosexual couples within the United States, and was part of the National Survey of Families and Households. The data had been collected in 1992 to 1994, and was the most recent large-scale survey available to measure sexual frequency in married couples. Brines noted that it is unlikely that the division of work and sexual returns for work has changed drastically within the last two decades.
