Cohabitation and Decor Can Mean Melding or Mayhem in Marriage reports Easy Home Concepts

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 15, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Many have run into the fact that deciding on home decor can change people. The décor of a home can relax a person, help make a person happy, or even affect his/her self-image. But now, according to Lauren Mechling of the Wall Street Journal, it may be possible for the home décor may save a marriage.

In a recent article, Mechling talks about the problems that can often arise within a marriage when couples are furnishing a home and both partners combine during cohabitation. She states that rooms can become designated as “his” or “hers”, while the furniture itself starts to become known as “yours” and “mine”. The reaction of the false dichotomies can, according to Mechling, cause distinct wedges that cause rift between the couple if there is no compromise found.

According to Jay Lebow, who is a professor of psychology and a marital therapist at the Family Institute at Northwestern University in Chicago, there are things like fighting over furniture and fixtures that will end with one person feeling less adequate and involved in the household. "The person who was living there all along feels hurt every time something is moved or changed. And the person who moved in feels like they've lost their voice," he told the newspaper.

However, Mechling states that it does not always have to be a negative. With books like “Luxurious Minimalism” by photographer Fritz von der Schulenburg and writer Karen Howes, those in a new move-in situation can find practical ways to combine their styles and compromise. According to Mechling, the book “"reflect a certain ideal—one maintained by a couple who, while equally strong-willed, have learned to make room for each other's visual style."
