Active Lifestyle May Bolster Sperm Count, Study Suggests reports Jacked Pack

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 16, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that the physical activity levels of a man may have an affect on his total sperm count, as well as his sperm concentration.

Researchers surveyed nearly 200 men ages 18 to 22 years of age regarding their exercise and TV-watching habits. The activity levels were charted over a three-month period, and the participants were then asked to produce a sample for the researchers.

Men who watched more than 20 hours per week of television had a concentration of sperm that was 44% lower than those who watched almost no TV. At the same time, those who exercised 14 hours each week, on average, produced a sperm concentration that was 73% higher than men who did less than five hours per week.

The overall effects held true when factors like body weight, stress levels, and dietary considerations were taken into account.

Audrey Gaskins, who is a doctoral student at Harvard School of Public Health, noted that sperm concentration and total number of sperm are two of the main factors when considering male fertility.

Gaskins is still quick to note that being active is not the only key ingredient to a higher sperm count. She cautions that it is not possible to make a conclusion to the true value of the early study until more work is done. "Ideally, we would have done a randomized control trial where we had men switch from different behaviors and then measured the results," she says.

Gaskins also pointed out that the different types of activity could bring forth different overall results. For example, long distance running and biking can reduce semen quality, according to previous studied.

Nevertheless, the study clearly shows some form of correlation in the male activity and sperm activity levels. Gaskins noted that the research stated that separate research that was focused on diet and semen quality was what spurred the interest in understanding physicality effect on fertility.
