(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Spamhaus is now warning all marketers that they ought to keep their databases cleansed of any bad email addresses, else they may be mistaken for spam and blocked.
The Brit-based spam-fighting organization has taken some rather pointed heat for blocking so-called “transactional” email message. Such messages include those that a retailer sends out asking for information from customers regarding whether or not they wish to receive receipts via email. The practice allows retailers to build their internet database, but the problem is that the email address is often incorrectly typed. That means that if the retailer begins to send other messages to the address, it can begin to take on the look of spam.
Spamhaus published the data that is utilized by email services to block IP addresses that have been known for their delivering of malware or spam. Spamhaus blocked certain email from major retailers that included the Gap and Glit, according to a industry marketing newsletter released.
The issue has not been one that is based so much on one-off receipt that goes to an invalid email address or typo. Red flags are often when a marketer continually sends emails, even when the receive a “bounce,” or notification that the email did not accept the message, according to Denny Watson of Spamhaus.
"If the email stream is persistent over time, especially high volume, and drifts outside the relationship of individual transactions, we may find these messages a problem," Watson wrote.
"The ongoing flow of presumably unintended bulk email from unattended mail systems operated by well intentioned but careless senders is unsolicited bulk email (spam)," Watson wrote.
