(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 03, 2013 ) Dothan, Al -- The Society of St. Vincent de Paul offers person-to-person service by donating their time, abilities or dollars directly to the neglected and/or suffering. Advocacy for those alienated or defenseless in the spirit of justice and charity is a top priority for the organization in the short and long terms. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic lay organization with over 4000 local conferences in the United States. The goal of the organization is to change the face of charity by offering tangible assistance to people regardless of their background, ethnicity or faith.
The Society in Southeast Michigan offers many programs and services to those who are in need of assistance. These services include thrift stores, summer camps, utility assistance, hospital and prison visits and food assistance. Listed below are brief descriptions of some of the programs offered by The Society in Southeast Michigan:
Energy Assistance:
In partnership with the Michigan Public Service Commission, the society provides eligible moderate to low-income families and individuals with assistance to pay their gas and electric bills through their energy assistance program.
De Paul Employment and Training Program:
Participants gain access to programs and services designed to improve job skills, educational aptitude, and vocational training that is necessary to gain permanent, upwardly mobile employment. Participants are encouraged to take advantage of services like job counseling, employment search, academic enrollments, referral assistance and soft skills workshops.
Food Assistance:
Matchan Nutrition Center – Hot nutritious meals are served at the center to people within Oakland County each week at 12pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The center also provides onsite medical, employment, legal, clothing and emergency food assistance.
Food Depots – The food depots provide food for individuals and families on an emergency need basis. Through the food depots, eligible individuals are provided with 20 pounds of food for their household. Families and individuals are provided with a variety of food items including: canned vegetables, fruit, soups, beef stew, dry pasta, cereal, bread, deserts, frozen meats and fresh fruit and vegetables when in season.
Medical Services:
The St. Vincent de Paul Dental Clinic provides dental services like fillings, extractions or dentures for adults without insurance. The clinic is open on four to five days per week.
Thrift Stores:
The Society operates twelve retail thrift stores throughout the Detroit community. These stores allow people in need access to emergency clothing, household items and furniture. Any proceeds the thrift stores earn support the other services of The Society of Southeast Michigan.
