Vulnerability Period Found To Predict Smoking Habit Reports Bill E Cigaret

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Many have wondered why it is that teens who try cigarettes get addicted so quickly at times, and yet for others there seems to be no strong habit formation. Now, a new study with nearly 40 years of data may have exposed that genes play a large role in the phenomenon.

Researchers initially examined data from a wide array of previous data in order to develop a genetic risk-factor score for heavy smokers. Following the research, they screened the genes of nearly 1,000 New Zealanders from birth to age 38 in order to note whether or not the individuals with high risk scored were, in fact, addicted to cigarettes more rapidly from their teen years.

According to the results within the JAMA publication online, those teens who had a “high-risk” marking and tried smoking were 24% more likely to become a daily smoker by the age of 15, while they also had a 43% likelihood increase of smoking a pack a day by the time they reached adulthood.

The high-risk teens were 27% more likely to find themselves addicted to nicotine, while they were 22% more likely to fail in quitting their habit as an adult. Subjects within the study with high-risk scores smoked 7,300 more cigarettes on average by age 38.

Those individuals with the genetic risk profile did not predict whether or not they would initially try cigarettes, however. Almost 80% of those in the study tried cigarettes, and those who did try, and also had a high-risk score, were more likely to become heavy smokers. The risk score was then greater in the prediction of becoming a smoker when compared to family history, according to the study.

Overall, there was zero relationship found between the high-risk category and becoming a heavy smoker when individuals began smoking as adults as opposed to as a teen. A so-dubbed 'vulnerable' period is now suspect in the development of habit formation when it comes to items and actions such as nicotine and smoking.
