(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- New research has surfaced showing that men benefit more on average from their holding of a power position in the workplace, when compared to their female counterparts. According to the study handled by the University of Toronto, the benefits of holding an authoritative position are more evenly distributed for women than they are for men. That means a man who holds a position tends to have less equals or immediate higher-ups.
Researchers also found that men who achieve the highest levels in their power structure were more likely to perceive their position as autonomous or influential. This was true even when men in the study shared a similar position of power with another worker, they felt they held position as the decision maker. This was especially true when the equal position was held by a female counterpart. Essentially, men felt an innate power position, even with equals.
The research's lead author, Scott Schieman, stated that the forms of the job control, such as autonomy, are coveted by many works, and added: "We know that job resources ― like authority and autonomy or income ― tend to bundle together. And yet, our research suggests that the bundling of these job rewards continue to differ for women and men."
Researchers stated that the study ruled out possibilities such as the differences within occupational levels, job sectors, work hours, and so forth.
Scheiman added: "The patterns we discover suggest that even when women 'lean in' and attain greater authority at work, the structural features of power have different consequences for the subjective experience of autonomy and influence in ways that favor men."
