(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Hong Kong will raise its general air quality standards for the first time since the late 80s as the British colony is now looking to reduce its vehicle and vessel emissions to assist in clearing up the smoggy skies.
Hong Kong will use the air quality standards that have been set by the World Health Organization as a reference for its personal objectives, according to a government statement. The new air quality will target a monitoring index that will be unveiled in 2014. The government will set out to review its own goals every five years in order to make sure goals are being met.
The Chief Executive of the push, Leung Chun-ying has made the cleaning of the blackened skies of Hong Kong a priority. The city has had worsening records since 2007, and failed to match areas like New York and London. The Chinese city has never met its air quality targets since it established and recognized them in 26 years, according to the government audit that was used at the end of 2012.
“The ultimate objective is to balance development against our latest air quality objectives by 2020,” Wong Kam-sing, secretary for environment, said today at a press conference. “We can say that we’re prepared to deploy a lot of resources into this.”
As of January, Leung stated that the city is attempting to offer HK$10 billion (equal to $1.3 billion USD) in subsidies in order for companies to replace diesel vehicles and also limit their life-span. Both options will help lower the smog that is responsible for 3,000 premature deaths per year within the city.
Now the metropolitan is seeking to add legislation that will force a mandate of ships berthing at the ports to switch over to a cleaner fuel alternative within the next 24 months, according to the government.
