* Let sensory input in. Before hiring anyone to work in his research lab, Thomas Edison would invite the person over for lunch. If the applicant salted his soup before tasting it, he would not be offered the job, regardless of his other qualifications. Comments Yudkin, “Edison’s thinking must have been: Someone so inattentive to reality would probably also ignore a breakthrough thought or piece of data right in front of his face.”
* Consider emotions at work valuable clues. The traditional workplace expects us to check our emotions at the door. Yudkin argues, “But not only can’t we really do that, we would thereby lose important pointers toward unavoidable interpersonal dynamics, physical realities and personal truths. Anger, boredom, surprise, exhilaration and other emotions have a lot to teach us if we pay attention.”
* Watch for personal patterns. Is it visual stimuli, sounds or bodily movement that most gets ideas flowing? People differ in that, and Yudkin provides copious commentary on how best to use such a pattern in your creative process.
