(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 25, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The voicebox of God now has jumped onto the Twitter bandwagon, and in his effort to reach a wider and younger audience, the 85-year-old leader of the Catholics has picked up over 1 million followers.
The effort to remain in touch with youth and more 'with it' adults of older generations has paid off for the Pope, as Benedict XVI opened his twitter account and hit on million followers earlier in the month. He sent out his first tweet, wherein he blessed the online fans, urging them to follow the words of Christ.
The Twitter launch is likely one of the most draw-out acts of its kind, as the elderly leader tapped at the screen of a tablet which was brought to him. In the end, his tweet read: “Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart,” the inaugural tweet read.
As he Tweets, the Pope does so in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Arabic, and German. Each language carries its own handle.
The first tweet did not go without lighthearted tomfoolery and curiosity. There were also criticisms and commentary, just like there is for nearly everything the leader does. One glaring problem that caught on immediately as the fact that the handle was almost immediately flooded with negative, foul, and cruel messages. Vatican officials stated that they had been expecting the negative backlash and were prepared.
“These are already all over the Internet, in newspapers, in so many forms of expression,” Rev. Antonio Spadaro, editor of the Jesuit magazine, “Civilta Cattolica,” told Vatican Radio this week. “They form part of ordinary communication.”
It was admitted by the church that the Pope will not actually type out his messages. There will be a dictated statement which will be handled by a secretariat of state.
The Pope's second tweet came an hour after his first, and read “By speaking with Jesus in prayer, listening to what he tells you in the Gospel and looking for him in those in need,” the responding tweet read.
His third post came after receiving a questions about keeping faith when there is seemingly no hope: “We can be certain that a believer is never alone. God is the solid rock upon which we build our lives and his love is always faithful,” it said.
