(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 25, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Residents of a town in Vermont answered a call to donate blood and came close to breaking a record.
The Red Cross collected 1,951 pints of blood at its recent Gift-of-Life Marathon. The town of Rutland was second only to Manchester, N.H., which set a record last year with 1,968 pints collected, according to a report at Vermont Public RadioÂ’s website vpr.net.
Police and fire official had issued a call for participation in the blood drive.
“We deal with life’s emergencies every day, and we understand the importance of a safe and stable blood supply,” Police Chief James Baker said in a news release. “Through the Gift-of-Life Marathon, we want to help ensure that supply is there through the upcoming holidays.”
Although Rutland did not break the record, many said the event was worthwhile.
Theresa Fowler said she took time from work to donate blood.
“There’s such a bond with Rutland County that people come out and try to break that record,” Fowler, of Castleton, told VPR.
“The need for the blood and this time of year there’s less people donating, and so it’s very important that people get out and give back,” she added.
Steve Costello, an organizer for Gift-of-Life, helped people find their way around the event.
“So far, so good. It’s been moving really smooth,” Costello said. “We’ve been going for 45 minutes at this point, and people as soon as they get out of health history are going right up to donate, so it’s going very quickly.”
He said this event was better organized than in previous years. The Red Cross beefed up staff by 50% but said future events would not be so large.
Costello said that the first Gift-of-Life Marathon resulted in 368 pints of blood collected. He never thought the event would grow so much.
