New Study Shows More Couples Living Together Longer Prior to Marriage

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study, an increasing number of couples are now living together prior to marriage. The study comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, the cohabitation of couples is now a more common occurrence among younger women than is living with a spouse or alone.

The report, which was released in early April, is based upon information collected by the CDC's National Survey of Family Growth. Over 12,000 women ages 15-to-44 took part in the survey of the years of 2006 to 2010. While over 10,000 men also took part in the survey, the particular portion of the study focuses on the female aspect.

Among the women who took part, 48% told interviews that they were living with their significant other but were not, of of yet, married to that person. In 1995, 35% of women admitted to the same type of cohabitation with a significant partner.

Fewer couples are waiting until marriage to move in together, in general. A mere 23% of women who answered the survey noted that they were married first. That total is down from 39% in 1995.

Couples are not merely cohabiting at higher rates, but are also doing so much longer than they have before. Women within the study averaged 22 months for their first stint at living with their partner. In 1995, under the same general question lines, the average length of cohabitation was 13 months.

For 40% of women, the live-in relationship led to marriage, according to the numbers gained through the study. The conversation rate is highest among Caucasian women at 44%, and Latinos at 44%. For women with college degrees the number is still higher, at 53% overall. For those who had been cohabitation together for more than three years, 32% of couples were still cohabiting, while 27% had split up.
