Link Between Acne and Milk Seems Likely Following Study

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 19, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- There is now a connection between one's diet and the risk of acne that is growing more intriguing with the connection of consequence that have been uncovered. As a consequence of a recent Italian study, researchers are now thinking milk consumption brings with it an increased risk of the onset of acne. Conversely, those who have a steady intake of fish products have a more protective skin-quality in regards to acne.

"This was a well-done, very large, multicenter case-control study," said Dr. Lawrence F. Eichenfield, who presented highlights of the Italian investigation at the Hawaii Dermatology Seminar sponsored by Global Academy for Medical Education/Skin Disease Education Foundation.

A diet-to-acne link has been something of a debate for many years now, with both dermatologists and dieticians alike siding separately. The public continued to hear both positives and negatives about possible links and general diet dos and don'ts. The conventional wisdom was that greasy foods like chocolate exacerbated acne potential. That notion was later dispelled, and now a recent study notes that it is high-glycemic-index foods like milk that are truly the culprit.

The Italian study was handled by Dr. Eichenfield, who spotlighted 2065 consecutive patients in the 10- to 24-year range that were diagnosed with moderate or severe acne. The control group had over 360 patients that had mild or no acne. In both groups, family history of acne was a strong correlatives. The use of milk product consumption more than twice a week saw an increased risk by 1.8 times those in the control. The intake of skim milk seemed to be more conducive to acne potential than whole milk.

In contrast, there was a 32% decrease in the likelihood of moderate or severe acne for those who consumed fish on a semi-weekly basis. Lower GMI also seemed to have a protective effect as well.

"How do I take this new information and use it in the clinic? The answer is, I donÂ’t, because I really donÂ’t know what the impact will be of dietary changes in my actual care of individuals with acne who come to me. But this whole issue of diet and acne is a really fascinating one," the pediatric dermatologist commented.
