(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 18, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Reedley College student Aaron Cook has created a new website that is intended to connect
young entrepreneurs to business owners, along with the goal to strengthen local business.
While ReedleyStartup.com is only within its fledgling months, it has proven to do just what it
aimed to do from the start. It is essentially a strong database for student entrepreneurs to create
connectivity, featuring their company, name, description, portfolio ,and contact information.
"It's a public way for students to see what's going on with other students' businesses, and for
local business owners who would like to use their skills," Cook said. "There's power in numbers,
so when one person promotes their business on Reedley Startup, it helps everyone."
Cook both designed the website, as well as manages its content. The site originally started with
a single page of a handful of students, and has quickly grown into a dozen startups, with more
on the horizon.
Cook stated that the idea's genesis stemmed from a Facebook page that he created called
SIFE (Students in Free Entrprise) Club that was available on campus. After attending the
Collegiate Entrepeneurs' Organization Conference within Chicago in November, Cook took it
upon himself to creat a more comprehensive director for those students who pined to connect
with businesses.
“There's just so many stories to be told, and this website will help tell them," Cook said.
Some of the companies featured on the website include Lauyrn Tanner's specialty baked
goods and Jason Hand's bookkeeping services. Even Cook's business Fruit Forest, is noted
on the site. Al Korell's laser engraving business is another start-up that was helped by the site.
Korell makes custom laser engravings. Korell found his way into the engraving business during
his military career. He made plaques by hand, but when he was disabled in the line of duty
he bought a machine that uses computerized lasers to engrave metal, glass, and wood. His
business as seen growth thanks to the website.
"Any time you're able to get a bunch of people together who have common goals, your business
is going to grow," Kroell said. "We're in an area right here where any business can prosper.
We've got people to talk to and mentor us, so that helps a lot."
Cook says he plans on growing the website while utilizing the photography services of James
Isaak (who is also a student at the college).
According to Jason Hand, ReedleyStartup.com has given a considerable boost to his own
accounting business. He specializes in the converting of business records into QuickBooks, and
says he has the site to thank for that.
"It's definitely given me a place to start," he said. "I started out with just one client and now I
have four. Between work and being a full-time student, I'm getting to the point where I'm going
to hire an employee and make it a full-time business."
