Liquidity Services is a company with an exclusive seller of surplus and U.S. Military vehicles,
and its regional auction within Indianapolis (as well as four other cities) recently kicked off,
offering military vehicles at bargain prices for civilians.
The Indianapolis Truck Center is not a place that stoops to TV ads and pitchmen to move metal,
but it is a still a place people recognize as a spot for bargains.
Military trucks tend to be handled hard and over a long period of time, which explains part of the
reason they are often caught for such low prices as $2,000 or $6,000. The trucks typically have
heavy-duty designs and are not often suited for over-the-road deliveries, which limits them quite
often to off-road uses like construction, mining, and logging.
Of course, there are aesthetic considerations to take in as well. While some may love the camo
look, companies and other individuals may fancy something better.
“They spray paint over the unit numbers, and that’s about it, really,” Indianapolis site manager
Shannon Pence said of the sales prep that the military puts into the vehicles. “The way we
get ’em is the way they were” when the military last used them.
One big exception: Trucks are stripped of weapons, armor and “classified stuff,” Pence said.
And tanks and planes arenÂ’t even sold whole. The military allows them to be retailed only as
scrap.
According to some, the show has come across at just the right time, as the show is set to hit
when other showcases are petering out.
“It came at a good time. The commercial stuff had gotten kind of slow,” Pence said.
