Scientists Find Possible Natural Remedy to Bed Bugs

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Research handled at UC Irvine and the University of Kentucky published an article recently within the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, which provides new hope against the battling of the pest known as bed bugs.

Provided that the ban of the harmful pesticide DDT, and other potentially harmful chemical compounds has persisted since the 1970s, bedbugs have been making a strong comeback within the United States. Thanks to bed bugs being easily transported from one location to the next, and being able to live a full year without feeding, the micro-pest is considerably hard to eradicate. Traditionally fumigation has not proven to be wholly effective and get be a rather pricey option.

However, new research conducted at the universities found that a natural method of controlling the bedbug infestation may be here. Kidney-bean leaves have apparently proven to be effective in trapping the bugs. Scientists have attempted the method, which is utilized in the southeast countries of Europe, wherein one places the leaves around the bed. The next day, bedbugs are found to be literally stuck to the leaves. The leaves can thus be burned or removed, along with the infestation.

After continued investigation, the researchers have found that the bugs were being snared by the trichomes on the leaves, making it impossible for them to escape. The finding has now fueled hopes by the scientists that a synthetic version of the leaves can be utilized to handle the pests in American homes.

The scientists say they are optimistic in the new find promoting the interest in getting rid of the pests in a much safer manner than previously available. There are many citizens who currently cannot afford the price of professional fumigation treatments, and have to turn toward untrained and potentially dangerous mark-down attempts. Thus, the leaves and hope for a synthetic type, brings some hope for a much safer alternative to professional services.
