Studies Show Motorcycle Helmets Could Be Safer

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new study that has been carried out by the German Hohenstein Institute in Bonnigheim has shown that motorcycle helmets could be made a lot safer.

A 3D-distance analysis, which looks at the variation between the geometry of the helmet inner face has shown that certain changes could be taken into account and changed in basic helmets to improve their overall effectiveness.

The bottom line seems to be that the inner shell size alone is not enough to provide the best in protection-to-fit ratios, and that the head shape is just as crucial to avoiding unfortunate death.

So far, the helmet manufacturers offering head shaped-designed items are Arai, after it concluded through their own research in the field. They have announced they are coming up with an “American Helmet” type soon.

The Hohenstein Institute study looked specifically at 6 major categories of head shape. They noted that a wide variance of 3.5 cm making it dramatically clear that the helmet size cannot possibly be the best fit for all head shapes. In fact, the variance was summed up from the measurement of one of the more common circumferences, and still could not account for the wide distance for certain shapes.

With the inner compact layer fitting rider's heads not always being one of the critical elements in shock absorption, it would be reasonable to figure that the same shape will assist in the creation of pressure points on the motorcyclist's skull.

Space between the skull and the protective layer/liner results in a less optimal protection in that case of impact, and such anthropometric head data might improve the overall helmet design. The trick will be to see if manufacturing companies take note of the finding.
