(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Skin cancer has developed into one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States, and residents in the Valley of the Sun are certainly no stranger to it.
"Arizona has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world," according to the University of Arizona Cancer Center. "It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that Arizona will have approximately 1,400 new cases of melanoma in 2013.”
While there are varying kinds of skin cancer, melanoma is the most dangerous, and a new study now shows it is turning up more and more often in children.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, cases of melanoma, while still considered rare, have increased each year since 1973 up to the latest data from 2008. It now accounts for 3% of all pediatric cancers.
The study was handled by Jeannette Wong of the U.S. National Cancer Institute, and appears in a May issue of Pediatrics journal. The largest jump in melanoma cases have occurred to tens between the ages of 15 and 19, and is particularly prevalent amongst girls.
There is no clear indication behind what is causing the increase, but Wong and others say increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sun and tanning booths could be to blame.
While the research held information about melanoma in participants, they did not specify the details of tanning exposure. Boys, however, were found more likely to develop melanomas on their faces and torso. This contrasted from girls who were found to have melanoma on their lower legs and hips.
Research noted that, just like in adults, fairer skinned individuals, and those with light hair and light eyes, or a history of moles and sunburns were more likely to develop melanoma than those who did not. Genetics seems to also play a large factor according to the study.
