(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Over 100 Coldstream Guardsmen who protect eh Queen at Windsor Castle have apparently contracted scabies. The disease had not affected the British army at such a high scale since the Korean War.
The outbreak of the contagious condition, which includes mits laying eggs under the skin and causing severe itching, was reported following the guards returning from military exercises in Germany.
Royal sources insisted that none of the infected troops had been in contact with the Royal Family or the public, and were quarantined once the affliction was discovered.
An investigation by the Ministry of Defence is focusing on the guardsmen's movements in the weeks that lead up to the outbreak to attempt and find the direct cause. Meanwhile, their bedding, clothing, any possible contaminated items have been removed. Each have also been issued a special 'anti-scabicide' cream to apply under officials are sure the infestation has been removed.
The scabies are usually contracted in highly unhygienic environments. Once the mites have laid their eggs, there is a two- to six-weed incubation period, wherein lesions appear on the victims arms, torso, and genitalia.
A guardsman said: ‘The Coldstreamers were on an exercise in Germany and must have been lying in a polluted ditch or something. Now the boys are rubbing in scabicide cream like there’s no tomorrow. Everyone is using it – not just the 120 confirmed cases. More than 500 guardsmen are affected. “
“All this is pretty embarrassing for us, and the other Guards regiments are having a great laugh. Beds have been stripped, clothes lockers emptied and offices fumigated. In all my years in the Guards Division I haven’t heard of anything like this.”
Precautions were followed by London to assume that the regiment's soldiers did not contaminate anyone else, if afflicted. Scabies were rife during the first world war, but have become much less common due to general personal hygiene regimens.
