Engineers Look to Better Seating in Ford Vehicles

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- As drivers deal with longer and longer commutes in Australia's larger metropolitan centers, Ford engineers have become aware that the in-car comfort for such drivers has reached critical levels. As such, more drivers are taking it into stronger consideration when making their purchasing decisions.

In recognition of this fact, Ford's leading engineers, lead by Carl Manester, have created smaller and lighter seats that are both more comfortable and more supportive for those who sit in them.

These seats are not only more comfortable, but also assist in the ability to help drivers improve fuel efficiency due to the overall reduction in the vehicle's total weight.

“People are spending more time in their vehicles and continually touch the seats, which is why it has become increasingly important to ensure their seat is both comfortable and supportive,” Ford seat comfort engineer Mike Kolich, better known inside the company as “Dr Derriere”.

“We are designing our seats so when drivers and passengers arrive at their destinations, they are relaxed and ready to go.”

Holich is a member of the global seating team that was created in 2005 in order to bring the development of industry-leading seats to the Ford company. The team creates varying seats that meet the quality, safety, and functionality packaging that is required by the company.

The Ford Kuga is the first Ford vehicle with a seat style specifically designed with the capability to conform to the Ford seat DNA. The DNA is a set of quantified measurements for each system in the new vehicle in order to give the best feel across the Ford vehicles.

When the team of engineers from ford looked at customer data in each region across the globe, they learned that certain assumptions regarding seats were flat-out wrong.

“We used to think Europeans liked aggressively shaped seats with firm cushions while Americans preferred flat, cushy seats,” Kolich said. “The reality is that regardless of the size and shape of a driver’s backside, they tend to value roughly the same characteristics when it comes to comfort.”

They found that European drivers wanted a seat with better cushioning, and Americans wanted better support. Both of these outcomes were not predicted by the team. And after running
thousands of tests, the team was capable of quantifying a general set of common standards that would provide the best for all where it mattered in Ford cars.
