Online Suit Tailoring Sites Ballooning

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- When Paul LeBlanc needed a suit, he did not need to look far. He was able to find one quite easily, in fact, as the Brookline financial adviser scanned the racks at the epartment store, he found a charcoal gray, lightweight wool, utilitarian piece that was perfect for office attire. Still, only a few weeks later, the 27-year-old the young business body's suit was the point of ridicule
by friends.

“I was told that I looked like my dad,” LeBlanc recalls. “That’s really not the most flattering thing to tell someone.”

As LeBlanc was determined to avoid any future insults, he joined the growing number of 20- to 40-year-olds that have begun to shop for bespoke suits from tailors. The process has become
a straightforward one. An individual picks a style, chooses the fabric, along with details such as lining, and measures oneÂ’s self at home. The results are then emailed and nearly a month later, a made-to-measure suit arrives at one's home.

Unfortunately for LeBlanc, he still does not have the suit he wants. The problem is that there are now so many custom suit companies the he is unsure which he can trust with his personal needs.

The online bespoke business has grown tremendously in the last half-decade. What started as a simple novelty concept with only a few designers, has now grown to over 50 companies in total.

“There’s definitely a big surge in the number of affordable custom suit options out there,” says Brian Boye, Men’s Health magazine’s fashion and grooming director. “I’ve been meeting with a lot of brands that are finding ways to provide a custom fit at a fraction of the cost” of a traditional bespoke suit.

Some companies are even using consultations via Skype to make sure measurements are taken correctly by customers. According to Boye, the online custom suit phenomenon has been driven primarily by shoppers between the ages of 21 to late-30s.

“My belief is that modern males, age 21 to 35, are very engaged with the idea of tailored clothing,” said Tom Julian, director of strategic business development for the Doneger Group, a fashion trend marketing group. It’s part of a major wardrobe change for many of these guys. “Dress-up looks were never part of their lifestyle since casualization in the workplace began in early 1990s.”
