(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 30, 2013 ) Chicago, IL -- Not only do individuals seem to resemble their pets from time-to-time, but there is also a chance the likeness between owner and pet is more than simply skin deep. It turns out that the pet owner may also share a pet's personality, according to new research.
Researchers from Bath Spa University in England took a survey of over 1,000 dog owners in order to determine the personality types of the respective pets. Based on the answers, pet owners were categorized into one of five groups: extroverted, agreeable, conscientious, emotionally stable, and intelligent and creative.
Researchers then drew from the connections between the owners' own personality to see if it correlated with the pet. What was found may surprise some, and simply fortify the beliefs of others, regarding dog owners personalities based upon their dog.
Toy dogs have been shown to be linked with those who are both intelligent and highly creative. This may break the stereotype held by some provided by the image of hollywood starlets carrying toy dogs in their purse. Those with toy breeds also showed to be highly creative.
Pastoral dogs, such as German Shepherds, Collies, and Corgis were shown to be inductive of a personable owner. Owners were found to be highly extroverted and certainly group-minded.
Gun dogs, such as Irish Setters, Golden Retrievers, and Spaniels, often have owners who enjoy being generally agreeable. Whether it is lounging about, taking hikes, or enjoying daily activities, owners of such dogs are as varied as they are willing to enjoy what life has to bring them.
When it comes to Bulldogs, Bishon Frises, and Dalmatians, owners are conscientious and duty-driven. Handling chores, getting things done with a stiff upper lip, and handling what needs to be handled is the trademark of such owners.
Terriers seem to indicate owners get the short end of the stick when it comes to what it says about the individual. Those with such dogs were shown to most likely illicit emotional instability on varying scales.
Working dogs, such as Boxers and Rottweilers or Great Danes are owned by individuals who are both agreeable and intelligent. Those who own Hound Dog breeds tend to have the most stable emotional states.
