(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 30, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While there are many smokers who take considerable precautions for those around them when it comes to smoking, the steps rarely actually eliminate the dangers that nicotine and other chemicals from the burning of tobacco pose to infants and children in proximity.
The dangers range from an increased risk for respiratory infections and SIDS to higher risk of cancer in the child's lifetime.
Still, short of setting up intensive sensors in a home, there is no real way to tell how much residue is actually making its way to the children.
That fact has led researchers at Dartmouth University to conduct a report, wherein they have come up with a prototype sensor for use almost anywhere. The product is smaller than a lighter or cell phone, and the prototype, which can fit in the palm of the hand. It utilizes polymer films to collect, trap, and then gauge nicotine levels held in the air. The project was described in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.
While there is a pending patent, BelBruno expects that a consumer version will be available in the near future, and involve a rechargeable batter, and perhaps a screen to show near-immediate layouts.
Second hand smoke combines the smoke from the burning of the cigarette and the smoke exhaled by the user. Thirdhand smoke is the tobacco reside that is left behind following smoking and can build up on clothing, walls, curtains, furniture, and other surfaces.
Significant exposure to the toxic compounds found in secondhand smoke can happen within a half-hour, which gives credence to the concept of banning public smoking inside areas like bars and event halls.
Spending less than 10 minutes in the backseat of a car with a smoker is capable of extending the daily exposure to harmful pollutants by 30% according to a separate study. The study was published in the Tobacco journal, and measured pollutant levels of over 20 tests inside stationary vehicles.
