Women Use Social Sites More Than Men

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 02, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While many adults have given into the temptations of social media, signing into Facebook or creating Twitter accounts, not all men and women agree on which sites one should spend their time on.

It is a virtual battle of the sexes, and there is no victor as of now; however, the scale appears to be tipping toward the women with a 71% to 62% usage edge for the fairer sex.

The numbers come from February's Pew Research Center study that pointed to women aged 18 to 29 being the most active social media users. As it now turns out, the female demographic is more drawn toward sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Tumblr than their male counterparts.

While 15% of online adults utilize Pinterest, 70% of them are females. These users tend to focus on tutorial, do-it-yourself projects, and recipe pins, all of which have 42% higher click-through rates than other content created. Still, Pinterest also drives more business referral traffic than Google+, LinkedIn, and YouTube combined, according to the Pew Research numbers.

Twitter takes a healthy second place with 16% of adults, with 62% being women. That number constitutes 40 million extra women who visit the site over men.

Females also account for 58% of Facebook's total users, which claims 67% of all online adult users. Women tend to be more active on the site as well, participating in 62% of the sharing, and they also gain 8% more friends than their male counterparts.

Males, for their part of online work, tend to gravitate toward Google+, LinkedIn, and YouTube. These sites are considered less of a social media by the average male. Only one in four men utilize Google+ as a social mechanism, as 75% do not interact with users. YouTube is also primarily a solo-usage site. Male viewers tend to utilize the site for nearly an hour each week, as compared to the female average usage of 35 minutes on average.
