(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 02, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Media Audit's preliminary findings for the nearly completed 2012 National Report is said to highlight that popular social media websites like Facebook and Twitter are continuing to increase their clout amongst users.
According to the study, over 60% of individuals have now visited these websites within the past month. The figures represent more than 89 million monthly unique visits to websites across over 100 markets, and is measured by the Media Audit.
The figure, when compared to numbers from 2011, show an increase from 58.5%, and constitutes a gain over over 5% in in year-over-year totals.
Among the 89 million monthly unique website visits, 83.4 million visited Facebook within a 30-day period. This shows Facebook remains at the top of the social media ladder. In 2011, 54.7% of all adults surveyed had visited popular social media sites, as compared to 57.5% in 2012.
LinkedIn grew from 15.7% to 17.6% in the same period and under the same consideration. The resulting figures represented more than 25 million in total, who logged onto social media sites aimed at reaching those within the business sector.
Twitter also saw in increase in numbers over the same period. According to the report, those who visited Twitter over a 30 day period grew from 12.4% to 14.4% in year-over-year totals.
Media Audit released a statement noting: "it may be likely many of these social media websites are helping to fuel these increases. According to the same study, social website users spend 7% more time in a typical day surfing the Internet when compared to the general population. Today, 18.8% of a social media website user's typical day exposed to all media such as radio, TV, newspaper, and billboards, is spent surfing the Internet. Furthermore, 44.5% of all social media website users are considered heavy Internet users, spending more than three hours per day surfing the web, a figure that is 31% higher when compared to typical web usage among the general population. Among all U.S. adults, 33.8% are considered heavy Internet users."
