(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- For those who purchase music online through downloads, as opposed to streaming services, a new report has suggested that you are likely an Apple iTunes user, or at least utilize the iTunes software to purchase such material. The latest numbers from the NPD Group noted that the Apple music service has continued its position as the dominant music download space in the final quarter of 2012.
The NPD study noted that iTunes has impressive 63% of the overall market cornered for the final quarter of the previous year, which means that over six out of every ten song downloaded were taken from the Apple store. That number puts a the company well ahead of the second-place store, Amazon, which holds a 22% share of the market.
NPD has made a point to explain that the “Annual Music Study 2012” rankings are based primarily upon unit sales and not revenue or dollar shares. The reason for the dominance from the Apple company is impressive based not only on sheer numbers but also on that rankings are worked based upon the share of the $2.9 billion that Americans spend on digital music purchases within the last year due, thanks in part to lowered prices.
These latest numbers also show what could be seen as a counter to the concerns of digital music purchases falling to the wayside thanks to streaming music. The report has stated that the total of Americans purchasing music has remained unchanged since 20010 at nearly 44 million. The numbers also indicate that over a third of each person interviewed for the study stated that owning music was “important” to the individual.
All told, while the number of buyers has remained consistent, the number of bought units has indeed grown. Thus, the industry itself has seen growth, despite individuals stating that the streaming and piracy activities would create a vacuum of profit for the industry as a whole.
One important area to note is that nearly a third of all individuals surveyed stated that owning a full album was of utmost important to them when it came to one's musical experience.
