Study Finds Social Networks Can Help Predict if Content Will Be Read

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 14, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- SurveyMonkey has conducted a new survey that shows the popularity of Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ proves to significantly impact the chances that content will be read.

The survey took into account 629 participants, of which over 370 were given a survey asking how likely they were to read any content that was posted on Facebook that already had 451 'Likes'. The other 255 respondents were handed a survey that asked the likelihood of reading an article with 11 'Likes'. The responses thoroughly demonstrated that users were more likely to read content based on the number of 'Likes' it had on the large social networking site.

The researchers also found the same to be true for Twitter, with the likelihood of a content piece being read based upon the greater number of retweets it received. OF the 629 surveyed, 374 were asked if the content had been retweeted six times, while the remainder were told it had been retweeted 697 times. The respondents were overwhelmingly more likely to check out the content with more likes.

Google+ also had the same correlation. The number of shares on the networking site dictated the general likelihood it would be read, or at least browsed, by the surveyed individuals.

The study took into account 615 respondents who were chosen at random. Males and females were taken into account at a near-50/50 rate, while the age range stood at 18 to 60. The annual income for each household ranged between $25,000 and $150,000+, with education levels of all respondents varying without focus.

The study was intended to note and underscore some already held preconceptions regarding SEO work. User bias of Google over Bing, and reasons for blocked websites were also surveyed within the study.
