(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 15, 2013 ) Bloomfield, MI – Detroit baseball history was revisited Tuesday, May 13, 2013 at East Hills Ball Park in Bloomfield, Michigan. Pitcher, Gabe Nazelli, helped his own cause and put his team ahead smashing a line drive home run 215 feet down the right field line with the bases loaded.
Oddly enough, the opposing team was the Bloomfield Hills Tigers. Suffering their first loss, Tiger batters managed four runs on three hits. The pitching duo of Nazelli and Cole Wilhemi struck out 13 batters. The final score of 10 to 4 gave the Angels their fifth victory in eight outings with four games left on the schedule.
The similarities between Ty Cobb, who played 22 seasons with the Detroit Tigers, and Nazelli end with a small note in the Atlanta Journal by Sports Editor, Grantland Rice: "Young fellow named Cobb seems to be showing an unusual lot of talent, although he bits his nails."
One important trait that is not shared by Ty Cobb and Gabe is their relationships to their teammates and opponents. Cobb was hated by opposing teams, managers, fans and the press. Most of his Detroit Tiger teammates wanted little contact with Cobb during and after the games.
With his red hair and infectious smile, GabeÂ’s personality makes him a favorite with everyone on both sides of the diamond. This is his second season as a sandlotter with many friends on the opponent teams.
Parents and coaches are amazed at his wealth of baseball facts and statistics. While at a Detroit TigersÂ’ game last season at Comerica Park, he was invited into the radio broadcast booth by announcer, Jim Price, to give the team lineups for that game.
GabeÂ’s favorite subjects at Detroit Country DayÂ’s Lower School are Math and Science; and, he carries an A- scholastic record. Both his parents are educators: Christopher is a Senior Lecturer at Wayne State University and Andrea teaches foreign languages at Detroit Country Day Middle School.
