Study Finds Those Who Eat More Vegetables Have 'Golden Glow'

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 16, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While many would love to get the tan that will allow them to compliment the vibrant colors of summer clothing, growing concerns about how one can get a tan without being exposed to dangerous amounts of UV rays on a consistent basis. There are creams and sprays that can be useful, and now there is research that shows that juicing and the drinking of vegetables can help produce healthier looking skin without having to spend time chancing cancer.

New research is showing that one can achieve a bit of a natural glow thanks to the use of vegetable juicing. A study was led by Dr. Ian Stephen at the University of Nottingham, which found that eating a rich diet of fruits and vegetables helped assist in a positive and healthy golden glow. The findings were posted in the Evolution & Human behavior journal.

“Our research shows that eating lots of fruit and vegetables is actually more effective” than getting a suntan, Dr. Stephen says.

Many individuals in the west do not eat enough vibrant and quality vegetables, despite having them at their disposal on a regular basis. That is why juicing is a quality alternative to cooking up the vegetables or eating them raw. Juicing allows everyone to get the proper amount of vegetables in a more efficient, and often more tasty, medium: natural juice.

Dr. Stephen noted that his team found people who eat a larger portion of vegetables have a more attractive 'glow' about them, that is produced by a more golden skin color. The reason for the glow is thanks to carotenoids, which are antioxidants that assist in seeking up toxins that can damage the skin.

“We found that, given the choice between skin color caused by suntan and skin color caused by carotenoids, people preferred the carotenoid skin color,” Dr. Stephen said. “This is something we share with many other species,” adds Professor David Perrett, director of Perception Lab,
where the study was conducted. “For example, the bright yellow beaks and feathers of many birds can be thought of as adverts showing how healthy a male bird is. What’s more, females of these species prefer to mate with brighter, more colorful males.”
